Entertaiment, from Latin entrare (“to make way in”), carries strong connotations of gaining access by force or impulsion. It is similar to the words penetrate, pierce, and probe in that all of them suggest an attempt to breach something or enter into something that is otherwise closed off. But there is more to entertaiment than the mere act of entering into a situation or activity. Entertaining can have a deeper purpose, such as revealing spiritual truth or eliciting social change. It can be private, as with conversation; or public, such as a banquet or a performance. Entertaiment can even involve the whole community.
