Education, as we have come to understand it, is the respectful and wise cultivation of learning and change. In the words of Mark K Smith, “Education is the process of sharing life with others, inviting truth and possibility.” This idea is not new, nor is it new. In fact, it has been practiced for thousands of years.
Formal education
Formal education is education provided by a recognized institution or organization. It requires a well-organized educational model, up-to-date course content, and professionally trained teachers. It also includes standardized tests and a formally recognized certificate. Formal education is a much better option than non-formal education, which may be unreliable, inefficient, or even harmful.
Nonformal education
Nonformal education is a type of education that takes place outside of a traditional school system. It is flexible, learner-centered, and contextualized. It is often provided to help ensure that people can have access to education regardless of their economic or social status. It is often provided in short courses and often does not lead to formal qualifications.
Homeschooling
Homeschooling is an alternative to traditional schooling. It eliminates the common classroom setting where students are usually from the same social backgrounds. Because of this, home schoolers are more likely to be successful in academics.
International student exchanges
The importance of international student exchanges in education is undeniable. Over one million international students studied in the U.S. during the school year 2017-2018. The number of exchange students is increasing steadily as compared to U.S.-born students, and these international students are filling important positions in U.S.-based high-tech and research companies. In fact, nearly one-fifth of STEM jobs in the U.S. were filled by international students in 2015. These foreign students are essential in industries like nuclear engineering and computer programming.
